Hunting - Day 4

Hunting South Africa
Milt and Steve

After breakfast, a crew retrieved my kudu while Steve and I waited at camp. When they returned, we watched them skin the kudu, then started off for camp Kubusi, where Hennie wanted us to harvest the rest of our animals. He arranged for his wife and daughter to meet us at King Williamstown, a point about halfway to Kubusi, where he bought us lunch.

Then we drove to a place that Hennie wanted us to hunt Impala. The landowner was a friend and would let Hennie hunt there, but none of the other PH's. Proving once again, it is not always how much you know, but who you know.

The impala came out and started moving around at about 5 PM, and I got the first shot. I hit the animal in the right front leg and he jumped about 6 feet straight up. The dogs began tracking him, but got off on a different impala and chased him down one hill and up another to a fence about a mile away. They stopped there, barking and waiting for us.

We started off to get the dogs, but spotted another impala about 300 yards down the road. Steve had his turn next and dropped the impala with a clean shot. When we got to the animal, we found it was the one I had wounded earlier! What a lucky break. I got my impala and Steve got another chance at another impala. It didn't take long. We spotted another about 15 minutes later and Steve again proved he is an expert shot. Bingo... another clean shoulder kill. And this one remained his impala. <grin>

It took about 30 - 45 minutes to round up the dogs and it was getting close to dark, so we took photos of the impala. The landowner gets the meat from these hunts, so Hennie talked to Mervin and asked if we could just go on and skin the animals out at Kubusi and bring the meat back the next day since it was getting so late. He also asked if we could hunt a blesbuck when we returned. Got a positive response, so we took off for our new camp, Kubusi.

Not a bad day's hunting. Retrieved my kudu, moved to the new camp, met our PH's wife and daughter for lunch, moved on Mervin's land and bagged two nice impala.

By the way, shown below is a blesbuck that was more or less the camp pet at Kubusi. And some other photos taken at Kubusi.

This was the Kubusi pet blesbuck. Note only one ear.

Chalet - where hunters stayed, really nice.
But we got a tent because all chalets were occupied.

We stayed in this really nice tent.

Inside of tent, complete with full bathroom facilities.

Clubhouse where we ate and visited in lounge area.
